Bilateral foot-drop in a patient with anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

Nerve palsy could be a previously unreported complication of anorexia nervosa. Examination of a 15-year-old girl with a history of eating disorder shows reduced sensation on the dorsum of her right foot, which, on investigation, was found to be bilateral common peroneal palsy. It is thought that the typical seated posture of the patient, with legs crossed tightly, could have caused direct pressure on the peroneal nerve because of loss of tissue around the head of the fibula, caused by weight loss. It is suggested that early recognition of the symptoms could ameliorate the palsy.
