Brain glucose metabolism in eating disorders assessed by positron emission tomography

Article Abstract:

The fact that anorectic and bulimic patients exhibit similar mental and neuroendocrine symptoms has led to the hypothesis of a dysfunction in the central nervous system of patients. Positron emission tomography was applied on the brain glucose metabolism of 10 underweight anorectics, 10 normal weight bulimics and 10 control subjects, all of whom were women. Relative hypometabolism was observed in both anorectic and bulimic subjects, pointing to the possibility of a common dysfunction in the parietal cortex or sensitivity of cortex to effects of eating disturbances.

Abnormal liver enzymes in outpatients with eating disorders

Article Abstract:

A sample population composed of 879 outpatients afflicted with eating disorders were examined to determine the frequency and the clinical correlates of liver enzyme abnormalities among the patients. Enzyme elevations were studied using medical charts and enzyme samples. Results indicated that abnormal levels of liver enzyme are not related to the prevalence of bulimia or anorexia nervosa.
