Childhood-onset anorexia nervosa: towards identifying a biological substrate

Article Abstract:

The role of biological factors in the development of anorexia nervosa was examined with particular focus on a possible underlying biological substrate. The subjects were 15 children and adolescents aged 8-16 who met the 'Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders' (4th ed) criteria for anorexia nervosa. All underwent cerebral blood flow radioisotope scans. It was found that 13 of the 15 anorexic subjects had unilateral temporal lobe hypoperfusion.

Functional neuroimaging in early-onset anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

The knowledge from functional neuroimaging studies of early onset anorexia nervosa is discussed with the results of the study. The findings that are compared refer to the methodologic constraints of functional neuroimaging studies, where the clinical implications are discussed and the avenues for further research are explored.

Early-onset anorexia nervosa: is there evidence of limbic system imbalance?

Article Abstract:

A group of children and teenagers diagnosed with anorexia nervosa were shown to have abnormal regional cerebral blood flow. This finding suggests one cause of anorexia nervosa may be an imbalance in neural circuits or pathways, possibly inside the limbic system.
