Maternal age and educational and psychosocial outcomes in early adulthood

Article Abstract:

There is growing public and professional concern about the short and long term effects of early parenthood on the intellectual, behavioral and social development of children. There is evidence linking maternal age with child-rearing outcomes. The relationship between maternal age and educational and psychosocial outcomes at age 18 have been studied in a birth cohort of 1025 New Zealand children. The children of teenage mothers were more at risk of adverse outcomes, and increasing maternal age tended to be linked more nurturant, supportive and stable home environments.
