Classification of child and adolescent psychopathology

Article Abstract:

The DSM IV and International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD 10) focus largely on the classification of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. These manuals use categorical classification systems which are better than the dimensional approaches. Epidemiologic studies show that comorbidity is common in child and adolescent psychopathology. Both DSM IV and ICD 10 fail to address subsyndromal disorders. The major psychiatric disorders identified in the two manuals are based on significant external data. Directions for future research are discussed.

Non-human primate models of childhood psychopathology: the promise and the limitations

Article Abstract:

The article assesses the macaque monkey as a valid model for studying childhood psychopathology. Categories for comparison include timing of normal emotional and social behavior development, patterns of functional and anatomical maturation of specific regions of the brain, and behavioral and neural responses to brain perturbations. Implications for research on disorders such as Williams syndrome and autism are discussed.
