Clients, consumers, providers, and products: where will it all end?

Article Abstract:

The cost of health care has continued to spiral upwards despite a number of so-called 'reform' efforts. As the healthcare industry evolves, physicians and patients are seeing a marked change in the terminologies used. Doctors have become providers while patients have become consumers. Using the language of economics in the medical profession is both distasteful and violative of the physicians' calling. Doctors should keep in mind that quality care always comes first in their relationship with patients.

Body and soul

Article Abstract:

The ever increasing demand for cost effectiveness within the health care system has led to the dehumanization of mental health services. Psychiatrists nowadays are under growing pressure to provide merely somatic therapies while ignoring the mind and soul of patients. Moreover, current psychiatric residency programs place undue emphasis on pharmacotherapy at the expense of psychotherapy.
