Clinical implications of attachment concepts: retrospect and prospect

Article Abstract:

Attachment theory has become widely accepted in the 25 years since the publication of Bowlby's first volume on the subject. Clinical implications of the theory include rejection of traditional psychoanalytic theory, change in residential care for children, evaluation of parenting, risks associated with divorce, and attachment disorders. Some unresolved issues include the behavioral control system, measurement of attachment security, qualities of attachment, influence of temperament, how one relationship affects another, boundaries and prediction of later functioning.
