Comparative concurrent validities of five alcoholism measures in a psychiatric hospital

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to test the concurrent validities of self-reported alcoholism measures in a psychiatric hospital setting using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule criterion.Research results reveal that the Michigan Alcohol Screening test predicts alcohol dependence best in a subject while the CAGE questionnaires best recognizes alcohol dependencies in the previous year. The implications of cutting scores based on area-wise techniques in clinical settings are discussed.

Two studies of reported pretraumatic stressors' effect on posttraumatic stress disorder severity

Article Abstract:

Researchers preformed two studies to contrast the consequences of military trauma on Vietnam veterans with high and low pretraumatic stress. Results of the two studies were inconsistent. The first study indicated that premilitary stress reduced the tendency to reexperience trauma following combat. The second study found that posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were directly related to trauma intensity but were not increased by milder premilitary stress.

Social maladjustment indicators in PTSD patients' families of origin

Article Abstract:

The occurrence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTDS) is unaffected by a general psychosocial maladjustment in a person's family of origin. A history of PTSD or PTSD-like behaviour in the family increases the risk for PTSD in moderate degrees and this is genetic in nature. A family history of anxiety disorders seems to affect a trauma survivor's risk for PTSD, however, other psychiatric disorders do not increase this risk.
