Criminology in the 21st century: foreseeable changes

Article Abstract:

Technological features of the 21st century will affect criminal behavior and the behavior of law enforcement officials and criminologists. Police officers may be able to use stun guns to prevent crime and high-technology equipment to track criminals. Criminals may be younger since schools provide less social control, and their cognitive development will be accelerated by a technological atmosphere. A criminal's disconnection from emotions may be related to a technological society. Criminologists must maintain their humanity and use technology as a tool.

Out on the town

Article Abstract:

The risks related with problematic alcohol use and treatments available for those individuals whose drinking contributes significantly to their criminality are analyzed. It is found that brief interventions are at least as effective as more intensive programmes in reducing alcohol consumption in at-risk groups and that an arrest referral scheme can achieve good levels of identification and referral, acceptable attendance, retention rates and effective outcomes in terms of attitude an behaviour change.
