Current philosophical issues in the scientific evaluation of behavior therapy theory and outcome

Article Abstract:

Behavior therapy theories must ascribe to scientific realism which is supported by the concepts of confirmation and epistemological relativism. Non-realism cannot adequately provide a firm base for theories which often deal with intangibles. Scientific realism deals with what is empirically adequate. Concerning behavioral therapy theories, one must conform to what is empirically adequate as well as heuristically valuable. There is also an element of relativism within the theories because one must intuitively choose according to the probable heuristic value of a theory.

Using scientific methods to resolve questions in the history and philosophy of science: some illustrations

Article Abstract:

The scientific method may be used to study the history and philosophy of science. The rationale behind this is to find the determinants of success that may be used by other scientists in furthering their own research. A system of arriving at a metatheory of science is discussed that has its own unique working assumptions. The representative sampling and method of arriving at such a metatheory of science is presented, focusing on actuarial methodology.

Hermeneutics, social constructionism and other items of intellectual fashion: intimations for clinical science

Article Abstract:

Hermeneutics and social constructionism may be used by behavior therapists to explore the philosophical foundations of their craft since positivism has been found to be obsolete. Two types of hermeneutics, methodological and ontological, are discussed and contrasted with social constructionism. Psychotherapy and behavior therapy is presented using the perspective of hermeneutics and social constructionism.
