Dissonance prevention program decreases thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, dieting, negative affect, and bulimic symptoms: a preliminary experiment

Article Abstract:

A dissonance-based targeted preventive intervention program for eating disorders is tested, using 30 undergraduate women with high body image awareness, ranging in age from 18 to 22. The students were assigned to a three-session dissonance intervention where they had to argue against the thin ideal. It is shown that thin-ideal internalization, negative effect and body dissatisfaction decreased following the program.
