Empirical tests of status consumption: evidence from women's cosmetics

Article Abstract:

Researchers found evidence that offers much support for the presence of status motives in the behavior of women who buy cosmetics. Contrary to the forecasts of standard consumer theory, which would not anticipate any systematic disparities to arise across products by the stage of social visibility, significant proof was found of such disparities. This behavior may be attributed to the opinion that socially visible products are linked with social classes.

Estimating the efficiency of consumer choices of new automobiles

Article Abstract:

Losses due to imperfect choices in consumer preferences of automobile purchases are studied. Respondents' automobile preferences were ranked based on quality. Cost savings resulted if the respondent bought the higher quality brand at a lower price than the preferred choice. Non-optimal choice was defined as the purchase of respondent's choice preference when there is a higher quality brand at a lower price.
