Factor structure and construct validity of the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms

Article Abstract:

The Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) measures diminished expression, inattention-alogia and social amotivation, which form the underlying structure of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Social amotivation correlates with child behavior problems, deficient premorbid functioning, social adjustment and lesser survival times. Diminished expression is associated with fewer prior hospitalizations and longer survival times. The SANS is useful in understanding the etiology, psychopathology and treatment of schizophrenia.

Factor structure of the brief psychiatric rating scale in schizophrenia

Article Abstract:

The factor structure of schizophrenia symptoms was examined using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). Two slightly different versions of the BPRS were used. The 5-factor solution fitted the data poorly. A 4-factor model incorporated Though Disturbance, Anergia, Affect and Disorganization, and this fitted the data better.
