Article Abstract:

A comment on the theory on rule-governed behavior as a method of control of human behavior in organizations is presented. The conclusions derived, however, are not supported by the arguments presented. Immediacy should not be part of the definition of reinforcement. Clarification between immediate small consequences as opposed to delayed large consequences is made. The self-control theory is proposed to explain the efficacy of rules in controlling behavior.

Comments on a theory on rule-governed behavior is presented.Rule-governed behavior in organizational behavior management seems to be a reasonable theory to explain how organizations create and maintain control of their members. Basically, rules are indirect-acting contingencies which means that they are not immediately reinforceable, but are cited when reinforcing action is taken against a member.

A comment on rule-governed behavior as a method of control in the organizational culture is presented. The comment enumerates the following: arguments for rule-governed are oversimplified, the idea of performance control by changing contingencies may be bulky and inefficient and self-control is not necessarily explained in the conceptual framework of the theory of rule-governed behavior.
