Immediate assessment of adolescent sex offenders seen at the police station

Article Abstract:

Psychiatric evaluation of juvenile sex offenders is best started upon arrest. A project doing this was tried in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 66 of the 81 boys evaluated, further treatment was recommended and in 39 cases, it was advised that this treatment be compulsory. The purpose of the initial interview, along with a tentative diagnosis, is to determine the insight and or control over the crime which the juvenile has. It is difficult for psychologists to maintain both the support and confrontation necessary to treat sex offenders.
