Importance of multiple purging methods in the classification of eating disorder subtypes

Article Abstract:

A study examines two assumptions implicit in the subtyping of eating disorders, namely, that purging behaviors are interchangeable, and that a primary distinction exists between the presence versus absence of any means of purging. Findings suggest that although purging behaviors may be interchangeable, the use of multiple purging methods is associated with greater severity over time.
