Investigating the role of alienation in a multicomponent model of juvenile delinquency

Article Abstract:

A multicomponent model of juvenile delinquency has been developed to investigate the interconnections of psychosocial variables and their links with delinquent behaviour. Attention has focused on whether the variables in this model are mediated through adolescent alienation. It was established that there are many different pathways through which delinquent behaviour could emerge. These include environmental and person-centred factors. It was found that societal alienation and delinquent peer associations mediate the link between school-related experiences and delinquent behaviour.

Adolescents' influence and co-operation in family decision-making

Article Abstract:

Data from over 900 families were used to examine the decision-making process involved in the selection of a secondary school. For adolescents and parents, there were no grade level or sex differences in adolescent influence and cooperation. An analysis of teenagers' self and parental influence resulted in three clusters which included democratic, coalitions and where one person is the most influential. The clusters differed in absolute ratings of both cooperation and influence.
