Knowledge of the ordinal position of list items in rhesus monkeys

Article Abstract:

A study on the ordinal position of list items in animals was conducted to provide clear evidence that monkeys acquire knowledge of the ordinal position of list items without the need for language, experience with serial tasks or a requirement to encode ordinal information. Results reveal that both subjects, two rhesus monkeys, met the accuracy criterion for their first maintained list in least amount of trials. Furthermore, the ease with which they acquired knowledge of the ordinal positions suggests that a monkey's potential for encoding them is greater than expected.

Auditory list memory in rhesus monkeys

Article Abstract:

Six serial probe recognition experiments were conducted on two 15-year-old male rhesus monkeys to test their auditory list memories. A total of 520 environmental sounds such as Morse code, footsteps, dog howling, stagecoach yells, tea kettle, seagulls, angry cat and other novel sounds were used in the research. Results indicate that auditory memory experienced a gradual evolution with retention delay. As the primacy effect disappeared, the recency effect grew stronger.

Concept learning and learning strategies

Article Abstract:

Matching-to-learning tasks were conducted on pigeons to determine their concept learning and learning strategies. Results reveal that pigeons learn configural patterns instead of abstract concepts. This may reflect their learning dispositions. Although it is unclear whether pigeons engage in if-then rule learning, pigeons making the most sample responses showed complete concept learning.
