Locally oriented perception with intact global processing among adolescents with high-functioning autism: evidence from multiple paradigms

Article Abstract:

An experiment to check the previous study which showed that persons with autistic disorder display a tendency to focus on minute details rather than look at the general picture is carried out. The findings are also consistent in showing superior performances in detecting embedded figures.

Local bias in autistic subjects as evidenced by graphic tasks: perceptual hierarchization or working memory deficit?

Article Abstract:

Autistic people are able to copy objects and nonobjects at the same speed and with the same accuracy as matched controls, according to research undertaken among 10 high-functioning autistic teenagers and adults. Autistic individuals produced more local features than nonautistic controls in the first third of their copying, but their constancy in graphic construction was similar to that of controls. It appears that people with autism use visual information differently from controls, demonstrating a general tendency towards a local bias on a number of types of tasks.
