Male homosexuality: a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective

Article Abstract:

Richard Friedman presented a paper on male homosexuality at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on Feb 20, 1992. The presentation and discussion are summarized. Friedman provided evidence supporting the position that sexual orientation is largely determined by prenatal biological factors, such as exposure to hormones. The evidence suggests that the analysis of homosexuality in terms of intrapsychic conflicts is outdated. Friedman also presented clinical fantasy data which contradicts the Freudian belief that humans are fundamentally bisexual.

Metaphor, fable, and skepticism as adjuncts in the interpretive effort

Article Abstract:

Douglas H. Ingram presented a paper on interpretation in psychoanalysis at a meeting of the Assn for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis on Jan 23, 1991. The paper and discussion are summarized. Ingram affirmed the value of skepticism, defined as openness to a basic inaccuracy in any interpretation, and of metaphor. Sidney Rosen serving as discussant argued that emphasis on interpretation could lead to too much intellectualization and that the meaning of a metaphor should be allowed to change during analysis.

The discussant was Arnold Mitchell. Porder described the evolution of the concept of borderline personality and concluded that it lacks usefulness as a diagnostic category.
