Neuropsychological evidence for case-specific reading: multi-letter units in visual word recognition

Article Abstract:

This article presents a case study of a male patient with attentional dyslexia and Balint's syndrome who has great difficulty reading nonwords and words with upper-case or mixed case letters. A series of reading-based studies reveal that this patient is dependent on using familiar multi-letter units to identify written words.

Visual similarity effects in immediate verbal serial recall

Article Abstract:

This study used four experiments involving the serial recall of visually similar words and letters to study the role of visual working memory in the retention of verbal information. Results indicate that visually similar items significantly hindered performance on the recall of words and letter case.

Processing and storage in working memory span

Article Abstract:

Experiments suggest that the multiple resource model provides a better account of resource allocation in working memory span tasks, rather than a model reflecting a single flexible resource pool. Data were obtained from tests using recall of presented words and a version of the sentence span task.
