Non-similarity-based conceptualization in pigeons via secondary or mediated generalization

Article Abstract:

Non-similarity-based conceptualization was produced and tested in pigeons using a three-step procedure. Classes of perceptually dissimilar stimuli such as chairs and cars amalgate into a new category of functionally equivalent stimuli just by being associated with a common responsein the first step. A new response to either stimulus class in the second step results in transfer to the other stimulus class in the third step. This form ofconceptual transfer is attributed to mediated or secondary stimulus generalization rather than to primary stimulus generalization.

Feature availability in conceptual combination

Article Abstract:

Interpretation of conceptual combinations was analyzed with three experiments. The first experiment shows that in complex phrases, comprehension of noun properties is slower than comprehension of phrase properties. The second experiment verifies this finding by using a rapidvisual representation technique. The third experiment showed that noun attributes were verified more slowly than the phrase attributes. Thus, in comprehension of complex phrases, the combination meaning is analyzed prior to its components.

Theory and reality in psycholinguistics

Article Abstract:

The relationship between language acquisition, clinical neuropsychology and neurolinguistics is reviewed. The psychological perspectives of linguistics is of intricate data and simplistic precepts. The converse is the linguistic view of psychology. The study of linguistics should attest to a number of basic methodological rules for it to be useful and relevant to psychology. Linguistic theories are still of unproven hypotheses and poses a problem for psychology in correlating this to behavioral reality.
