Observed emotional involvement and overinvolvement in families of patients with bipolar disorder

Article Abstract:

A study to examines the construct validity of an observational coding system for both appropriate and inappropriate emotional involvement that permitted separate ratings for relatives' intrusiveness and distress related patient's well-being is presented. Results suggest clinicians working with such families to help them learn to judge under what circumstances such involvement are appropriate and inappropriate.

Development and validation of an observational coding system for emotional overinvolvement

Article Abstract:

The reliability and construct validity of a behavioral observation coding system of emotional overinvolvement (EOI), an index of intrusive, excessively self-sacrificing, or exaggeratedly emotional behavior, displayed by the relative of a psychiatric patient is studied. The study shows that the interrater reliability for the three scales was adequate to excellent.

Methodologically sound, cost-effective research on the outcome of couple therapy

Article Abstract:

The primary methodological issues that an investigator faces in conducting outcome research during treatment development, efficacy testing, and effectiveness evaluation is discussed. Small level studies that potentially can be implemented by practitioners were detailed, which provided valuable information to the field.
