On the site of loss: a response to Antokeletz's paper on cross-cultural transformation

Article Abstract:

Juana Canabal Antokeletz's cross-cultural transformation paper is important for the concept of a hybrid identity generated by immigrants as a part of assimilation which accepts certain portions of dominant and immigrant culture. However, the use of the internal structures' transmutation paradigm introduces hidden biases by comparing immigrants to adolescents who are not completely developed culturally. The terms used to describe the hybridization process are also inappropriate because they emphasize discarding characteristics of each culture rather than accepting some.

The question of welfare reform and refugee Fo's answer

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton signed into law the welfare reform bill in Aug 22, 1996. The new law prohibits the disbursement of Supplemental Security Income benefits to legal immigrants who have yet to become citizens, which include refugees who suffer from physical and mental illnesses. With the new law, refugees will be deprived of their only source of income as well as medical health benefits. This provision is irrational because legal immigrants in the country contribute $30 million per year more in taxes than they consume in federal aid.

Voicing voicelessness: on the poetics of faith

Article Abstract:

Sigmund Freud made a great contribution to humanity by providing tools to understand the mind and its complexities. By understanding the unconscious, humans have understood such factors as language, history, faith, hope, and remembering. Poetry has brought these elements together while giving the listener something recognizable and pure. A good example of this is how a survivor of the bombing in Hiroshima, Japan, can apply some of T. S. Eliot's work to the event.
