Pindolol and methylphenidate in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: clinical efficacy and side effects

Article Abstract:

Pindolol is as effective as methylphenidate (MPH) in decreasing hyperactivity and conduct problems of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children at home. A double-blind placebo study of 52 ADHD children shows that it decreases hyperactivity but has no effect on conduct disorders in school. Its effectiveness is more lasting than MPH's. However, it is therapeutically less effective during psychological testing and has little effect on anxiety symptoms in ADHD children. Pindolol has more side-effects, such as frequent occurrence of paraesthesias, nightmares, and hallucinations.

Article Abstract:

The developmental and cognitive correlates of theory of mind (ToM) and emotion recognition ability in children with autism, with pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), were examined. The results of the various analyses converged and suggested that the best predictors of social cognitive ability were verbal memory, performance IQ, age and gender.
