Potential applications of behavioral decision research to treatments for drug abuse, related risky behaviors, and other problems: a comment on Fischhoff and Downs

Article Abstract:

Findings from behavioral decision research can potentially be applied to substance use treatments and associated risky behaviors. The research can be used to determine the pertinent risk and consequence data for certain substance abusers, with some knowledge already obtained that can be used to identify prevention interventions. Scientists must remain non-manipulative and ethically neutral when using behavioral decision research methods to establish risk data for substance use prevention and treatment.

Fluctuations in the time required for elementary decisions

Article Abstract:

The time taken in speeded decision-making reflects a dynamic complexity that occurs in natural systems self-organized on the border of chaos and order. The l/f noise fluctuation can be used to describe the trial-by-trial variability fraction in reaction time latency. Four experiments are undertaken to study reaction time variability, involving methodoligies, tasks and areas of perceptual judgment that usually appear in cognitive psychology.

On the framing of multiple prospects

Article Abstract:

A study exploring the decision making patterns involved in multiple independent uncertain prospects was conducted. The subjects were composed of 316 college students and 586 physicians. Results indicate that segregation as a decision making pattern is usually, but not always, the norm since people also are sensitive to some characteristics of the aggregate distribution of outcomes.
