Predisposing factors and consequences of occupational status for long-term unemployed youth: a longitudinal examination

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal study of the psychological health of a group of unemployed young Australians indicates that psychological distress is reduced by moving from being unemployed to being employed. However, moving to being employed does not lead to improved self-esteem. It is possible that improvements in self-esteem require longer periods in the work force than were possible for this research. Furthermore, young people may develop self-esteem in ways other than employment. It is clear that general academic ability levels affect employment opportunities.

Ego-identity status and narrative structure in retrospective accounts of parental career influence

Article Abstract:

Young adults tell stories of parental influence differently at different stages of identity formation. Identity achieved individuals emphasize the importance of support and encouragement by parents to achieve their life goals. Their stories also indicate that identity formation re-affirms their closeness with parents. While the search for alternatives enhances their psychosocial identity, cohesive families hinder this development. The Identity Diffuse individuals also exhibit a high level of commitment to career goals.

The joint actions of adolescents in peer conversations about career

Article Abstract:

Career development can arise from meaning and action which participants co-construct, as is show by a study where video-taped conversations between adolescents were recorded. The joint actions and meaning of those conversations were identified. There were goals such as educational planning, personal future, and career selection. These goals involved exploration, formulation, validation and challenges. The project guiding these joint actions can be described as self refinement.
