Prevalence estimates of alcohol problems in a Veterans Administration outpatient population: AUDIT vs. MAST

Article Abstract:

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) was administered to 722 Veterans Administration outpatients to determine whether the measured prevalence of alcohol problems changes according to the screening questionnaire used. The results show that some patients with previous alcohol problems scored below cutoff on the AUDIT and above cutoff on MAST. The possible reasons behind the differences in identification rates are discussed.
