Recommendations for a research agenda in suicide and sexual orientation: working groups, workshop on suicide and sexual orientation

Article Abstract:

The participants in the Workshop on Research Issues in Suicide and Sexual Orientation came up with several recommendations for future studies on suicide and sexual orientation. These recommendations fall under the following categories: conceptual foundations for research, research design, measurement and sampling issues, and research ethics. The participants also developed common recommendations, including those on the multidimensionality of sexual orientation and the need for further examinations of the validity and reliability of measures of sexual orientation.

Case consultation: Samantha Morrisey: Suicide and the need for support

Article Abstract:

Samantha Morrisey was an obese, 29-year-old woman who suffered from a bipolar disorder. Morrisey's history shows that her problems began during childhood and that her relationship with her parents, especially her mother, had been strained almost as far back as she could remember. Rejected by therapists who had been repelled by her aggressive behavior, the deeply depressed Morrisey committed suicide by smothering herself with a plastic bag. Psychotherapists' comments on Morrisey's case are presented.
