Relapse and maintenance issues for smoking cessation

Article Abstract:

A study examining the short-term and longer term maintenance of smoking cessation and relapse and the factors affecting these outcomes is discussed. Factors improving outcomes but which reached relatively few smokers compared with public health approaches included intensive intervention, pharmacotherapy, and telephone counseling. Predictors of relapse and potential areas of research are listed.

The patient exit interview as an assessment of physician-delivered smoking intervention: a validation study

Article Abstract:

This article describes research to validate the effectiveness of physicians' holding an exit interview with patients about stopping smoking. Patient perceptions, comparisons with audiotapes of interviews, and implications for interventions are discussed.

Do processes of change predict smoking stage movements? A prospective analysis of the transtheoretical model

Article Abstract:

This article describes how the transtheoretical model (TTM) has been applied to stages of change in tobacco smoking. Experiment implementation and the failure of TTM to accurately predict results are discussed.
