Relation between marital quality and (step) parent - child relationship quality for parents and stepparents in stepfamilies

Article Abstract:

A research effort analyzed how the perceived marital quality affects the perceived quality of relationships between stepparents and children. Two independent samples of couples living in stepfamilies were taken. The participants of the first sample were spouses in 111 stepmother families and 92 stepfather families that belonged to the Stepfamily Assn. of America. The second sample used participants that were spouses in 442 stepfather families and 75 stepmother families included in the National Survey of Families and Households. The perceived marital quality and stepparent-stepchild relationship quality was found to be more strongly associated than that which involves biological parent-child relationships.

Competition between friends: The joint influence of the perceived power of self, friends, and parents

Article Abstract:

A study considered parents' power perceptions and their influence on how their children interact with friends, the power perceptions of children themselves, and the intergenerational transmission of power perceptions. The findings show that children's verbal competitiveness with friends is predicted by a perceived powerlessness of both children and parents. Intergenerational transmission effects were only significant for mothers and sons.

A model of fathers' behavioral involvement in child care in dual-earner families

Article Abstract:

Fathers and mothers of preschool aged children were assessed for fathers' behavioral involvement in child care. The results confirm previous findings that long work hours can prevent fathers from participating more in child care, although mothers' extended work hours act to increase father participation.
