Role of television in adolescent women's body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness

Article Abstract:

The type of television programs watched are better predictors of adolescent women's drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction as compared to the total time spent watching television. Body dissatisfaction is positively related to the amount of time spent watching movies, serials and soap operas, and negatively related to watching sports programs. Music videos are the only programs that significantly predict drive for thinness probably because they depict sociocultural norms of ideal body image.
