Seasonal variations in black-faced black spider monkey (Ateles chamek) habitat use and ranging behavior in a Southern Amazonian tropical forest

Article Abstract:

Spider monkeys are renowned as frugivore specialists in dietary terms that spend the majority of their time in the middle and upper levels of tall climax forest. Although habitat-based temporal variations in the availability of ripe fleshy fruit had the most dramatic effect on spider monkey ranging behavior, within the most productive habitat ranging behavior in the form of day journey lengths and day range use was further influenced by the availability and distribution of these resources.

Comparative use of color vision for frugivory by sympatric species of platyrrhines

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that since furgivory by sympatric species of platyrrhines have unto six different color vision phenotypes, they might be expected to include fruits with a wide variety of hues in their diet is tested. The results suggest that most fruit species included in the diet can be discriminated by most color vision phenotype present in the population.

Sugar concentration of fruits and their detection via color in the Central American spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi)

Article Abstract:

The fruit forging behavior of Ateles geoffroyi is studied by measuring both the reflectance spectra and the concentrations of major sugar in the consumed fruits modeled with different color phenotypes. A consistent negative relationship is found between fruit detection performance and sucrose concentration.
