Practitioner review: physical investigations in mental retardation

Article Abstract:

Mental retardation is defined as a disease characterized by the incomplete development of the mind and impairments of skills. It occurs in more than 1% of the child population and boys are more affected than girls. Its etiology may be traced to prenatal causes, inborn errors of metabolism and environmental influences. The disease frequently occurs with cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy and other psychiatric disorders. A work-up with a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist or a pediatrician is recommended in all cases of mental retardation.
