Social phobia: an analysis of possible developmental factors

Article Abstract:

A study of a sample of 68 persons with specific/generalized social phobia and 25 control individuals regarding family history of anxiety, neuroticism, extraversion, shyness during childhood and traumatic conditioning was conducted. Social phobia was predicted by traumatic conditioning combined with childhood shyness. The study revealed considerably higher recurrence of traumatic conditioning happenings for subjects with the specific subtype while those with the generalized subtype had lower extraversion scores.

Psychophysiological differences between subgroups of social phobia

Article Abstract:

An investigation of the phobia for speaking in front of an audience reveals that nonanxious controls exhibit a lesser degree of fear than those with and without avoidant personality disorders (APD). The extent of fear cognition and subjective anxiety is higher in individuals with social phobia and APD, while the heart rates for individuals without APD is enhanced during speech.
