The California Verbal Learning Test in the detection of incomplete effort in neuropsychological evaluation

Article Abstract:

The California Verbal Learning Test is examined with regard to the ability of its four variables to distinguish test-takers with moderate and severe brain injuries from those with mild head injuries who are not exerting enough effort. The four factors investigated are Trials 1-5 List A, discriminability, recognition hits and long-delay cued recall. Malingering mild head injury participants are found to score lower on all four factors than those with moderate and server brain injuries.
