The clinical utility of randomized controlled trials

Article Abstract:

The relevance of the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to the treatment of bulimia nervosa was examined. Specifically, the applicability of findings from RCTs to different patient populations, therapists and clinical settings was evaluated. Results show that RCTs normally include bulimia nervosa patients with multiple problems and levels of disturbance whose severity is comparable to that of patients in clinical settings. The generalizability of RCT findings depends on the nature of the study and clinical setting.

Interrupting the binge-purge cycle in bulimia: the use of planned binges

Article Abstract:

The application of planned binges was thought to decrease the frequency of the binge-purge cycle and consequently increase the effectiveness of the cognitive behavioral treatment of bulimia nervosa. However, this treatment proved ineffective in the elimination of the problem presentation for a large number of participants as indirect procedures are used in the treatment to control the patterns of eating disorder.
