The construction of situation models in narrative comprehension: an event-indexing model

Article Abstract:

The event-indexing model relies on the assumption that story events are indexed on five independent aspects of the situation model such as time, space, protagonist, causality and intentionality. The experiment shows that the various situational aspects are not extremely intercorrelated in stories. The reader's multilevel and multidimensional memory representations were analyzed through the verb-clustering task, which was found to be responsive to various reading conditions and representation dimensions and levels and so a valuable analysis tool.

Verification of statements about story worlds that deviate from normal conceptions of time: what is true about 'Einstein's Dreams'?

Article Abstract:

Two experiments were conducted to examine the truthfulness or the falsity of statements read from the novel 'Einstein's Dreams' written by Alan Lightman. The study tested whether the participants could transform the assumption of time in the narrative into reality through verification of statements after reading the story. Results indicate that all readers had difficulty in propagating the novel assumptions about time. On the other hand, slow readers displayed more accuracy in their verification of atypical inferences.

Some beginnings of word comprehension in 6-month-olds

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that the learning process of associating sounds and meanings may occur sooner for words that refer to salient social figures in infants' lives than for words that connote immobile objects. The ability of 6-month-olds to correctly associate the words 'mommy' and 'daddy' to their own parents were examined. Results indicated that infants link sound patterns with meanings at 6 months of age.
