The dimensionality of the Hollenbeck, Williams, and Klein (1989) measure of goal commitment on complex tasks

Article Abstract:

Goal commitment is widely measured through a nine-item, self-report developed by Hollenbeck, Williams and Klein (HWK). This scale is important because the lack of commitment to specific goals is often cited as a cause for the failure of the assignation of specific tasks to increase performance. In order to assess its utility in goal commitment and complex tasks, the HWK scale is tested for dimensionality through three complex tasks studies. Results indicate that responses to one item subset reflect goal commitment while responses to another subset reflect performance expectances.

The impact of perceived loafing and collective efficacy on group goal processes and group performance

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the effects of social perceptions on group goal processes and the role of group goal processes as mediators of perception and performance reveals that social perception variables can influence on group goal setting processes and that social perception influences performance. Moreover, the study reveals that factors influencing group performance include cohesion, perceived loafing, collective efficacy, group goal difficulty and group goal commitment.

Article Abstract:

Research analysing existing models for assessing goal committment and the relationship between goal setting management and performance is presented. Particular attention is given to the theories of Hollenbeck, Williams and Klein and to independent samples.
