The joint effects of task-related negative affect and task difficulty in multiattribute choice

Article Abstract:

Task-related negative effect influences decision-making positively in easy tasks but negatively in difficult tasks. This is explained by scanning strategies which allow a person to examine information quickly, but not discriminately. Choice accuracy increases in easy task events since the amount of information acquired about a set of choices also increases. In difficult tasks, decision makers do not spend as much time examining the most important choice attributes so that scanning strategy decreases choice accuracy.

A new test of image theory

Article Abstract:

A numerical procedure for testing compatibility phase treating importance rejection and weights thresholds was developed to examine hypotheses of the editing phase and image theory in multiattribute choice methods. The new procedure was shown to be an effective test, which accounts for attribute values and importance weights. The test also generated consistency rates about 55% higher than the editing hypothesis in accounting for dominated choice alternatives.
