The longitudinal structure of the children's depression inventory: Testing a latent trait-state model

Article Abstract:

Latent trait-state analyses are conducted to distinguish between a stable trait dimension of depression in which individual differences are stable over time and an autoregressive dimension in which individual differences are stable over time. It is suggested that the longitudinal structure of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) varies considerably depending on the age of the target and the type of informant.

A large, national U.S. sample of children revealed that peer ratings of social behavior proved far better than adult ratings at differentiating clusters in cluster analysis. The fact that the realm of intraindividual adjustment is not well understood by parents and teachers of these same children, is suggested.
