The rational mind and the problem of volition

Article Abstract:

The theory of motivation has been refined by two ideas, namely goal settingtheory and volition. Goals are ends set by humans. These may be singular or multiple and are determined by motives and values, which are determined by personality. Goal setting is a conscious process which results in action which may be conscious or unconscious. Volition is the construct whereby action is regulated by conscious and unconscious thought, and as such, it is a function of cognition.

The study of goals in psychology

Article Abstract:

The theory of motivation has been given new life by the heuristic study of goals. Goals provide a holistic model that may be used by the various psychological disciplines. The study of goals provides insight into the organization of changing behavior as affected by context, how behavior interacts as a system with cognition and affect, and finally insight on individual differences of personality and its subsequent interaction with the environment.

On the nature and functions of motivation theories

Article Abstract:

The theory of goals supplementing motivational theory is not enough to provide a holistic model of behavior. In addition to goals, a construct of needs must be examined to determine the foundation of the goals. As such, the self-determination theory provides such a construct since it focuses on the need for competence, relatedness and self-determination. The theory also delvesinto the social aspect of goal setting and motivation.
