Understanding the use of the insanity defense

Article Abstract:

Trials involving insanity pleas receive a great deal of publicity, and there is a public perception that the plea is used too frequently. However, survey data indicate that the insanity plea is relatively rare and that its use and success rate vary among jurisdictions. More data on the incidence and use of the defense is needed, especially for cases in plea bargaining and negotiation.
