Updike: fiction and the writer's access to contradictory ego states

Article Abstract:

The fiction of John Updike attests to the author's ability to access the unconscious and personify split-off self-representations as fictional characters. In Updike's case this ability was probably related to the psoriasis with which he was afflicted since early childhood. Updike's protagonists exhibit permeable self-systems and tragic flaws, but their early traumas are not described. Parents are depicted as psychologically distant, and lack of empathy in relationships is a common theme.

Charles Dickens: the first (interpersonal) psychoanalyst or - A Christmas Carol: a literary psychoanalysis

Article Abstract:

Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol' anticipates psychoanalysis in its description of the transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge. At the beginning of the story Scrooge shows characteristics of an anal character, suffering from alienation as the result of childhood trauma. Dickens clearly shows that Scrooge's problems are the result of his meanness of character. Scrooge's nightmares bring insight as the basis for a change of character.
