A top contender; WordPerfect for the Macintosh

Article Abstract:

WordPerfect for the Macintosh brings the power of the IBM-PC package to the Macintosh environment. It brings sophisticated word processing features not previously available on the Macintosh, like automatic repagination, word count and redlining. A key feature is the ability to transfer WordPerfect between multiple hardware, from the Macintosh to PCs and VAX systems. Access to commands is somewhat awkward because of WordPerfect's reliance on multiple-keystroke commands. This can be mitigated with the use of macros. The program may take some time for Macintosh users to adapt. It is a perfect choice, however, for offices with various hardware. WordPerfect 1.0 for the Mac lists for $395. During the introduction period, WordPerfect will send the program to any Microsoft Word user for $99 and the cover page of the Microsoft Word Manual.

Colorful Quark

Article Abstract:

Quark Xpress 2.0 is an upgrade that adds style sheets, color and the ability to create color separations to an already popular page makeup program. This program is best for preformatted documents, such as books and newsletters. More than 16 million custom colors can be used for text or lines. The program imports text from Microsoft Word 3.01. Xpress also includes an 80,000-word spelling checker and a Font Usage utility that lists all of the fonts in the document and will globally change any of them. Graphics boxes can be copied and moved to a different location without losing their contents. A drawback is the inability to move anything from an active page to a nonprinting area. The pull-down rule guides are also useless. The $795 list price is $100 higher than the last version.
