Cascading style sheets

Article Abstract:

Cascading style sheets (CSS) is a global format that permits a user to define a style for a Web page or a group of pages. If the user knows HTML, the style can be created by hand. If not, an HTML or Web page editor can be used. Headlines and second-level subheads, and details of formatting, can be specified once instead of having to be done over and over. Moreover, global changes can be effected across an entire site. This makes a kind of discipline possible that frees a designer to focus creative energy on making a Web site communicate effectively.

Back in the ball game

Article Abstract:

MicroPro International's Wordstar Professional Release 5.0 is a significantly improved product rating four out of a possible five stars. Notable among many new features is excellent laser printer support, including both Hewlett-Packard and PostScript printers, cartridge and soft fonts. Dot commands are replaced with menu commands for font selections. The new Advanced Page Preview feature shows on-screen the appearance of the printed page. The user can view the page at several magnifications, scroll through pages, and view facing or multiple pages. Improved page layout options include eight snaking columns, text flow from one column to the next, and inch counts as well as column spaces for page dimensions. Wordstar's biggest drawback is graphics capability. Only EPS files can be imported and they must be sized in advance. Line drawing tools are poor. Word Perfect is a better choice for people who make frequent use of graphics in their documents.

Added style: Wordstar 5.5

Article Abstract:

Micropro International's $495 Wordstar version 5.5 has few improvements, yet is still a good choice for people who create lightly formatted, text-heavy documents. One improvement was the inclusion of Bitstream's Fontware with the program, although font installation is difficult at best. A special version of Inset Systems' Hijaak for graphics importation can only produce low-resolution bit-mapped images. Wordstar 5.5's best feature is the Advanced Page Preview, an excellent display considered the best in the PC word processor category. Style sheets are another new feature which further strengthens Wordstar's already commendable text-only word processing abilities. Unfortunately styles saved from one document can not be transferred to another, and there is a new command which automatically changes leading when point size is changed.
