Beyondpress 3.0

Article Abstract:

Astrobyte's BeyondPress 3.0 is the most full-featured of the QuarkXTensions for QuarkXPress users. Version 3.0 is a stand-alone WYSIWYG authoring tool that also has the tools of its predecessor, version 2.0. The software is worth the investment of $495 for firms that work in XPress, but as an all-encompassing authoring tool, the system fails in offering basic features that client-driven Web projects many times demand. BeyondPress in its Authoring mode allows the user to create native XPress documents that can be exported as HTML. When exported, the page layout is kept through the use of a grid of invisible tables, similar to a good portion of Web-designed products. Every object is placed in individual data cells, and BeyondPress generates the requisite invisible GIF files for placeholder cells and even uses a clever routine to keep the overall page size.

Flash 2.0

Article Abstract:

Macromedia's $299 Flash 2.0 brings the speed of vector-based animation to Web pages, allowing a GIF image to be reduced by as much as a factor of 10 when saved as vector art. A vector-based Flash movie can thus be as small as 10KB without diminishing quality. The program requires a plug-in viewer, but the plug-in is only 100KB and can be downloaded and installed in under two minutes. Microsoft Internet Explorer can be instructed to download and install the plug-in automatically on the PCs of site visitors. Flash's drawing features make it easy for artists to develop a concept quickly. Files can be imported from Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, Deneba Canvas and Macromedia FreeHand, and any element can be converted into a symbol for storage and reuse. The new version adds support for WAV and AIFF sound formats, but not MIDI.

BeyondPress 2.0

Article Abstract:

Astrobyte's $595 BeyondPress 2.0 HTML editor significantly accelerates the conversion of QuarkXPress documents to HTML, but is too expensive for an editor that cannot stand alone. BeyondPress 2.0 improves upon its earlier version by allowing the conversion of tabbed text into tables and the setting of colors and background images. The user can map an XPress document style-sheet to HTML, a process that expedites the conversion of large files but results in standardized HTML pages. By dragging separate portions of the document into a new folder, the user can easily reorganize images and texts. Although BeyondPress' image conversion can be accomplished without a separate graphics utilities, a separate text editor is necessary to manually adjust each conversion.
