Cachet: color for the rest of us

Article Abstract:

Cachet, a new image processing software from Electronics for Imaging Inc, is an excellent color enhancement and separation program for Apple Macintosh computers. It is easy to use and requires no color prepress experience. Its features include two very valuable tools called Edit by Reference and MultiChoice, which are both straightforward and fun to use. Edit by Reference enables users to compare a scanned image with one of 24 reference images that have been corrected and printed. The reference images come both on disk and in book form. MultiChoice allows manipulation of an image within 10 control areas, such as exposure, white-point adjustment and midtones. Cachet also features EfiColor, a color management system that automates the color matching process throughout various devices, such as printers, monitors and imagesetters. Cachet produces images of exceptional color quality. Its few drawbacks include its large requirements for speed and memory space, poorly indexed documentation and a Sharpening tool that can only be invoked on printing without offering a preview. Cachet costs $395 until Oct 31, 1992 and will be $595 thereafter.

Making sense of color management systems

Article Abstract:

The need for color management systems (CMS) for desktop publishing that will operate across platforms and handle color capabilities of all types of printers, monitors, and scanners is growing and the atmosphere of competition rather than cooperation makes the market chaotic and current products problematic. Color management systems are used to characterize, calibrate, and interpret colors across machines that use environments based on cyan, magenta, yellow and black or red, green and blue. Currently no industry standards exist and only Apple has attempted to install color management at the most basic system level. But Apple's ColorSync, available in the Macintosh, has been ineffective. Other products making inroads to standardized CMS technology are Agfa Corp's FotoFlow, Electronics for Imaging Inc's EfiColor, Light Source Computer Images Inc's Ofoto, Candela Ltd's Candela Color Management System and Kodak's ColorSense and Precision Color Management System.

Planning pages for the press: new page imposition software saves your time and money on film preparation

Article Abstract:

Five new Apple Macintosh- and IBM PC-based page imposition programs help designers and publishers save money and time on film preparation. Page imposition is the process of gathering a publication's individual pages into signatures of pages arranged in the order that they will be printed on full-size press sheets. The programs can be categorized as either QuarkXTensions, which allow imposition to take place from within the page layout program, or stand-alone programs, which require users to save documents as PostScript print-to-disk files. The QuarkXTension programs - Corder Associates Inc's $179 Printer's Speed, XTend Inc's $249 ImPress and David King & Associates' $1,750 InPosition - work directly from QuarkXPress, but they do not work with other programs. The stand-alone programs - Ultimate Technographics Inc's $1,995 Impostrip and Aldus Corp's PressWise - run under DOS and the Mac, respectively.
