Corel Photo-Paint 5.0 Plus

Article Abstract:

Corel Corp's Corel Photo-Paint 5.0 Plus is a good low-cost image-editing program for Windows. The product lists for $249, or $199 for the CD-ROM-only version. This full-featured product allows for layering, on-canvas text entry and editing, and Photoshop plug-ins. It has many selection and masking options. One major caveat: with images 16MB or larger, Photo-Paint 5.0 Plus will only open and work with part of the image at a time. The product automatically creates a layer for each object imported. The designer can then work from the Layers/Objects roll-up palette to control an object's transparency, feather it or merge it into the background. Rotating objects is simple. Corel has tossed in a plethora of software add-ons, including filters, 50 floating color objects, 288 seamless tile textures and 1,000 compressed 24-bit photographs. Photo-Paint 5.0 lacks the high-end features of Micrografx Picture Publisher and Adobe Photoshop.

ClarisDraw 1.0

Article Abstract:

Claris Corp's $399 ClarisDraw 1.0 is a great improvement over its predecessor, MacDraw, but still falls short of being a truly professional draw program. The application's chief drawback is its lack of prepress features. On the plus side, ClarisDraw has all the standard drawing tools and an intriguing set of new smart tools. The SmartSize feature automatically retains the width-to-height ratio of designated objects. SmartSize will automatically adjust all objects in a group if one object is altered. SmartConnectors, lines that automatically stay connected to an object, make it easy to design organizational charts and other objects depicting relationships. ClarisDraw includes a 256-color palette and more than five dozen fill patterns and gradient fills. An upgrade from MacDraw Pro costs $89 and an upgrade from MacDraw II costs $99. The program requires at least a Mac Plus with 2MB of RAM and System 6.0.
