Desktop Entrepreneurship

Article Abstract:

Seven topics that should be addressed when writing a winning business proposal, including an executive summary, table of contents, business history and description, analysis, strategy and fees, operations, management structure, and financial projections, are discussed in relation to starting a desktop publishing business. A one-page overview of the project is a good way to start the proposal. A list of the products and services that will be sold should appear in the business description. Competitors and customers need to be defined, as does the marketing strategy. A comprehensive list of computer and production purchases, inventory requirements, and cost of the facilities should be found under operations. It is important to include both start-up and production costs. Use your skills as a desktop publisher to create the most effective proposal.

For a song: PC publishing saves thousands for New York's Metropolitan Opera

Article Abstract:

The Metropolitan Opera's (New York, NY) three-person graphics department uses $71,500 in IBM PC compatible-based hardware and software to create the $94 million organization's advertising, annual report and promotional materials in-house, saving $72,000 annually in typesetting and other related costs. The Met's desktop publishing system consists of two Club 386 Model 325Ci IBM compatibles, an 80286-based PC compatible, Aldus PageMaker, AST TurboLaser printer, QMS-PS 810 Plus PostScript printer, and a Computgraphic 9400 laser imagesetter. A major advantage of the system is very rapid turnaround of printed materials, particularly important when ads or programs must be quickly revised due to a performer's illness or other unexpected program change.
